Sequester!

Today, our government entered the state of “Sequester”.

I can’t say I think much of it…

Didn’t much care for it, even back in the nineties.

Sorry, but I will always prefer The Original, and The Best…

...You never forget your first sub!

When SeaQuest DSV premiered, one critic called it "Voyage to the Bottom of the Ratings."

Very good, Anon!

Though I watched SeaQuest DSV for a while after its premiere, it never captured me the way VOYAGE did. Thus, the (“first sub”) tag-line to my post!

Indeed, in the grand tradition of VOYAGE’s creator, Irwin “Never Throw Anything Away” Allen, that tag line actually dates back TO the days of SeaQuest DSV.

Back then, I envisioned doing a promo ad for VOYAGE, mildly referencing its new competition, which would have run something like this:

VOICE OVER with BILLBOARD: “Why go on a QUEST…” (with the word “QUEST” stylized in such a way that recalls the logo for SeaQuest DSV) “…when you can find THE ORIGINAL right here!”

Open a montage with a majestic stock shot of the Seaview moving gracefully through the deep…

Then, quick cuts, in rapid succession, of various scenes from the color episodes…

…The whale ramming the side of Seaview, explosions and pyrotechnics overcoming the Control Room, a faceless Cyborg being incinerated in the sonic furnace, Victor Buono in his golf cart, the Flying Sub de-berthing from Seaview’s forward hatch, Giant Anthony Sterling, Seaview in the grip of the “Deadly Creature Below”, the huge Man-O-War, Flying Sub gliding through the air, the lizard dinosaur, Nelson and Crane in mortal combat from “Death Watch”, the “Thing from Inner Space” first surfacing from its lagoon, the Flying Sub hitting the water, the two Nazi’s throwing gas canisters, the Shadowman, Nelson causing a cave-in from “Destroy Seaview”, the Polaris Missile breaking the water’s surface, Seaview obliterating the Flying Sub with a forward laser shot from “Terror”, Blackbeard, Mr. Pem… and finally one of those prehistoric or otherwise dangerous islands being blown off the face of the Earth! (Whew!)

We rerun to a more placid image of Seaview with the VOYAGE logo – very much like the final image in my post.

VOICE OVER: “VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA”, weekdays on (whatever channel or network)…
TAG LINE: “…Because you never forget your first sub!”

…And now, thanks to Washington politics, I finally get to USE that line in something! Isn’t life wonderful that way?

LOL re: all of the posts! I'm reminded of MAD Magazine's parody "Voyage to See What's on the Bottom".

Yes, while I followed VTTBOTS (is that like "Fembots"?) enthusiastically back in the 60s and even have most of the DVDs, SEAQUEST, er, didn't, um, float my boat.

It was a "been there, done that" show from the beginning, starting with its captain. I enjoyed Roy Scheider's performances in virtually everything else he did, but he just didn't "ring true" as the fearless leader in this series. He was about as effective for me as was Scott Bakula in "Enterprise".

That's not to say that Scheider was the reason why the show "tanked" for me. It just felt rather plastic compared to its predecessor with Crane & Nelson...

“Plastic” might actually be as good a way of describing the difference between the two shows, as I’ve ever heard! Very good, Bruce!

…Gimme good ol’ “Organic” Voyage any day!
